Robert Breckinridge named citizen of the year
Submitted photo. Robert H. Breckinridge Jr., a board member of the Avon Land Trust, has been named Avon Citizen of the year by the Avon Chapter of UNICO.
This award is sponsored by UNICO National, Avon Chapter, serving the community for 26 years. The award committee, under chairman Greg Van Deusen, bestows the award on an individual who has distinguished himself or herself with unselfish service to the community, and who has helped make Avon a better place in which to live.
“Bob was the unanimous selection of our committee, for his tireless work to help preserve green space in Avon,” said Van Deusen.
The award reflects the motto of UNICO, the largest Italian-American Service organization in the United States: “Service Above Self.” UNICO stands for Unity, Neighborliness, Integrity, Charity and Opportunity.
The Avon Chapter of UNICO International chose Breckinridge for his outstanding volunteerism on the board of directors of the Avon Land Trust. His work there has truly made Avon a better place to live. The Avon Land Trust, founded in 1973, has preserved 344 acres in Avon from scores of donors. These land holdings, and the plant and animal life living therein, help fulfill the Trust’s goal of retaining the natural charm of the town for the enjoyment of the public.
Bob’s family moved to Avon in 1960, and he graduated from Avon High School in 1973. A partner with the Avon Dental Group, he attended Middlebury College, the UCONN School of Dental Medicine and the St. Francis Dental Residency program.
Volunteering with the Avon Land Trust since 1999, Bob has served as a board member, and as president from 2004 through 2010. He has worked to provide public access to large parcels of land, promoted wetland and open space conservation, and helped increase the amount of land that the trust preserves and protects.
His volunteerism with the Avon Land Trust also includes speaking at public meetings, mapping out trails and doing trail work. Bob’s recent work includes helping to establish both the Skyline Trail to the Heublein Tower, and the 17-acre Chidsey Road Nature Preserve in 2011. He also serves on the Avon town Natural Resources Committee.
In learning of this award, Bob noted the work of all the Avon Land Trust board members for their steadfast promotion of the organization’s mission, emphasizing he was privileged to be part of such a dedicated team. Said Bob,
“I am honored to be recognized by the Avon Chapter of UNICO,” said Breckinridge. “It has been my hope through my involvement with the Avon Land Trust to help provide residents access to woodlands and open space protected in their natural state.” Continued...
